Conspiracy Theory Question and Answer:

SPOOKY QUESTION:

Hey [Spook],

Thought you might be interested in this discussion on the radio tonight:

"Why do people believe conspiracy theories? Have any conspiracy theories had an impact on you? and what's the most outlandish conspiracy theory you've heard?"
----------------------------------------------------
SPOOKY ANSWER:

I like the loaded question- "What's the most >outlandish< conspiracy theory you've heard?" That's like asking; since when did you stop denying that you beat your wife ?

The answer though, to the question of the most outlandish conspiracy theory, is the one that states there are NO conspiracies- especially anything dealing with the US "Government".

However, the first question posed is quite reasonable. "Why do people believe in Conspiracies ?" I think there's two obvious explanations:

1. Many people love a good mystery or secret, and will go for all manner of stories including those with tenuous or absent "evidence". The sort of stuff I'm thinking about deals with conspiracies that are based upon non-existing or misleading/mistaken "facts". Ancient Astronauts, Moon Landing Hoax, Rods "Phenomena" etc. Of course these people will also tend to believe in fact-based conspiracies, sometimes without understanding the hard evidence behind them.

2. The other side of the side of the coin for the more circumspect, once you get past the ridicule and disinfo, is the fact that some conspiracy "theories" stem from very well researched facts & physical evidence. People who are very thorough (and open minded), as opposed to gullible, after a good deal of research, will believe in some conspiracies because it would be illogical to do deny them. This includes, JFK, MLK, RFK, TWA 800, Oklahoma Bombing, 911, Gulf of Tonkin, Iran-Contra, Lies that led to the Iraq War, "CIA" control/influence of the media/academics, MK ULTRA, Operation Gladio etc etc.

BTW, the two which impacted me the most were the questions about JFK's Assassination and, of course, 911.
