Return of the Green Jamahiriya? Gaddafi’s Son Asks Putin for Political Support

The son of the overthrown Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, has asked for political support from Russia.

This is with reference to a source in Moscow, Bloomberg reports.

The publication writes that 46-year-old Saif al-Islam, recently released from prison under an amnesty, sent a representative in early December to meet with Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Mikhail Bogdanov. The representative handed over a letter to the Russian diplomat for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to the publication, in the letter he welcomes Putin and the Russian government, reveals his vision of the situation in Libya and asks for support of his political ambitions.

According to Bloomberg sources, he is going to put forward his candidacy for the presidential elections, which, according to the UN plan, should be held in the country in 2019.

Sources of the publication report that the Russian authorities have not yet opted for one of the presidential candidates: there are connections with Russia both for Field Marshal Khalif Haftar, the Libyan National Army Commander, and for the UN-supported Prime Minister of the National Unity Government Fayez Al-Sarraj – both of them will certainly qualify for the presidency.

At the moment, Russian companies are negotiating with Libya on the development of resources and the creation of infrastructure.
