Syria Ceasefire Comes into Force Under US-Russian Peace Deal

The Russian and US-brokered nationwide ceasefire in Syria has come into effect, beginning at 7pm Damascus time (16:00 GMT) on Monday. The Russian Defense Ministry says Moscow and the US will create joint center to define terrorist targets.

Two key aspects of the ceasefire to consider are that ISIS and Al Nusra are excluded, and that the terrorists controlling areas of Aleppo are surrounded. It is unlikely that the ceasefire will hold.

Clipped Text: Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham, one of the largest Syrian militant groups, rejected the proposed ceasefire deal that would end all hostilities between non-terrorist factions inside the country, Al-Arabiya News reported on Sunday. Ahrar Al-Sham’s spokesperson “Abu Yousif Al-Muhajar” stated on Sunday that this ceasefire is “unacceptable” because it allegedly strengthens the pro-government forces. If true, this will likely undermine the shaky stability needed to implement the proposed agreement on the ground.
