NASA's Mission to the Asteroid Belt

NASA's Mission to the Asteroid belt is an attempt to observe materials that have remained unchanged since the formation of the solar system. By understanding the composition of these rocks, especially the largest ones, the US space agency hopes to better understand how our planets evolved.

The probe for the mission will be using a low thrust Ion Engine which means that the craft will have years of directional control allowing it to visit multiple targets for extended periods rather than making flybys or one stop engagements.
